Understanding “Check” and “Call”

Hello,

I’ve watched the world series of poker on TV just recently. I heard at some point of the event that the players “check”, what does it implies? I don’t fully understand.

I’m also curious if what should a player suppose to do when someone calls.

Thanks and nice, helpful site!

Donald

Donald,

To check a bet to a person means that you are passing on your option to bet. You are turning the option over to them to act. When a player’s bet is called, what happens next depends on where you are at in a hand. If you are at any street other than the river, the next card is dealt. If you are at the river, you turn over your hand once you are called and you show your hand.
